The time has come to make the move to rebuild the school at the village of Dreketi, on the island of Qamea, in Fiji. This project has been hatching for several years. In 2016, because of cyclone Winston, the small school at Dreketi was swept away in a landslide.
The Fijian government funds were stretched to breaking point and funds for the rebuild of the school, pictured below after the landslide, were simply not available.
The Rotary Club of Taveuni took on the monumental task of raising about $FJ225,000 to rebuild and enhance the school. Funds have arrived from many places in the South Pacific.
We do not yet have sufficient funds to complete the task. But we are close enough to make a start. Costings have been completed, a builder able to do the job has been found and the children need the best education possible. We still need your club’s help. Can you find a few thousand dollars to allow us to finish the project?
In October 2022, a team from the Rotary Club of Taveuni, together with a representative of the Rotary Club of Northbridge, NSW, Australia visited the village to discuss with the stakeholders the best position for the new school. The photos below describe that visit!
